Rules of the Game

A unique set of rules designed for speed, strategy, and a distinctly different style of play.

  • 1

Each team played with six players: three forwards (offense) and three guards (defense).

  • 2

Players were restricted to one half of the court—forwards stayed on offense, guards stayed on defense.

  • 3

Offensive players could dribble only twice before passing or shooting.

  • 4

Players had just three seconds to make a decision with the ball, keeping the game fast-paced.

  • 5

After a made basket, play restarted quickly with a referee pass at half court to the opposing team’s offense.

  • 6

On missed shots, offensive players could apply pressure to prevent the defense from advancing the ball.

  • 7

Defensive players were also limited to two dribbles, emphasizing passing and teamwork

  • 8

By the 1940s and 1950s, guards were coached to play aggressive, physical defense, including steals, tie-ups, and shot blocking.
